Federal public education funding has taken a significant hit this school year, with local traditional districts and chartered public schools such as TPS experiencing challenging cuts in equal measure. We learned about many such cuts over the summer, and have been working tirelessly since then to reshape our budget to protect our most important programs and to continue to do the thing we do best: providing heart-mind-voice educational excellence to every single student in our care.
A dramatic new cut is now on the horizon. There is a proposal for an Oct 1 reduction in this year's Title I-A and Title II-A funding, and a further significant reduction for next school year, along with the complete elimination of Title II-A and Title III funding. Title I and II are funds that support low and middle-income students and their families. Close to 40% of current TPS students qualify for the Federal Free & Reduced Meal Program, and therefore for the funds in question. Title III funds provide for professional recruitment, training, and development for our visionary team. Cuts to all of these funds will truly impact every member of our school community.
Impacts
(1) If the Oct 1, 2025 obligations for this school year Title I-A and Title II-A are rescinded, schools––including TPS––will lose money we are counting on and already spending.
(2) Cutting Title I-A by 25% and eliminating funding for Title II-A and Title III for the 2026-2027 year will have a significant impact on the services we provide to low and middle-income students and families, and will effectively eliminate professional development.
